So I want to touch on a topic that's important to me. I'll attempt to keep it as succinct as possible.

I am black. My boyfriend is white/Nicaraguan.

Even before we met, I preferred men of other races. (Mostly because the black male population where I grew up was very... fake. They were determined to be thugs- we live in gated communities.)

It's a topic that comes out in my work, a lot, and just now I'm noticing the depth of it.

One main character is black/Japanese, her lover is white.

One main character is black, her lover is Chinese.

One main character is a dark skinned mermaid (does that count as black?) and her lover is of Indian/Caribbean descent.

Another character is currently unpaired, which is what brings me to my actual question.

What do you all think of the issue of race in relationships?

Should fictional black women date fictional black men?

I'm sort of torn, myself. Mostly because I am in a mixed relationship, and I see nothing wrong with that, at all. You love who you love.

On the other hand, fiction wise... I'm coming to the realization that I can't really quite recall a whole lot of positive fictional black couples. It's easier with television (Fresh Prince, Family Matter, Cosby Show), but when it comes to books, I am honestly at a loss to name any in my recent memory.

If my work is devoted to bringing more strong black women to the forefront of visual media and literature, should I not give them strong black men to be at their sides?

Let me know what you think.

(Also if anyone decides to have words with me because I'm not dating a black guy, there will be consequences.)

Bolded and italicized so no one misses it again.
