I run science fiction conventions in the midwest and have been frustrated at how white most of them are. I think some of that may be the emphasis on long-established authors and traditional western european tropes in the genre but I'm also wondering if aspects of how the conventions themselves are structured and the events that happen at them do not appeal to some people. I know the conventions I started at had much more live music and participatory music and dance, and I miss that at conventions that are quieter, but then some conventions don't have spaces for people to talk, and are very loud and crowded, and then I miss the quiet too.Do you go to conventions at all? What do you like there and what do you dislike? Are there changes you would like to see made to the image and structure of SF conventions to better welcome and encourage a diverse fandom to participate?I'm putting this under racial issues because there is no topic for events and gatherings...
