Static co-writer Robert L Washington III has died at the age of 47.

The comics writer passed away in Mount Sinai Queens Hospital in New York City after suffering multiple heart-attacks, reports Robot 6.

Washington was best known for his work on the first 18-issue run of Milestone Comics Static alongside Dwayne McDuffie and John Paul Leon.

He also worked on Shadow Cabinet for Milestone, DC Comics' Extreme Justice, Timewalker for Valiant and Acclaim's Ninjak.

The writer struggled to find work following the comics crash in the 1990s, finding himself homeless several times. The Hero Initiative assisted Washington with rent and food.

His final work, the autobiographical strip 'One More Time', was published in Hero Comics 2012, a charitable publication that was released last week.

Washington's collaborator McDuffie died last year from complications following a medical procedure.

The pair's work on Static can be read in DC's Static Shock: Rebirth of the Cool collection.
