Joe Illidge has a article about STORM, The Color Barrier and a special examination on Black culture as it relates to the worlds of comic books and popular entertainment.

For Black History Month, CBR and I have brought back The Color Barrier for a special examination on Black culture as it relates to the worlds of comic books and popular entertainment.

So without further ado, I have to kick off the month by talking about one of the most well-known Black superheroes around, Storm of the X-Men.

Created by writer Len Wein and illustrator Dave Cockrum, Storm was first introduced in "Giant Size X-Men #1," a comic book which also introduced other mutants of color, and is a collector's item.

Born Ororo Munroe, the woman who would become Storm had a Kenyan princess for her mother and an African-American for her father. She was born in Harlem, but would spend her first set of formative years in Egypt.

A former thief and street-smart survivor who discovered her powers to manipulate the weather, Ororo was recruited to travel back to America and join the X-Men, a group of mutant heroes who fought to protect Homo sapiens and mutants alike.

In the forty years that followed, the ups and downs of Storm's character development have been enough.

Post your thoughts about the points he brought up.

I spoke about this in the Black Panther thread on CBR so here is where I go all in again...

I dumped Storm as a fan when Marvel and some of the Storm fans showed their true colors on having a Black Power Couple so I pulled a Larry David Curb Your Enthusiasm move and stuck with the Black Panther T'challa...

http://youtu.be/LP7FVn2MZ6Q

The incessant arguments over whether Storm was actually black or not between both fan bases was enough to let her go so my Storm statue sits on the shelf in my sons closet collecting dust particles while 2 of my four Black Panther statues sit on my computer desk waiting for Chadwick Boseman to knock that movie out real nicely!

If there is such a tug-of-war to keep Storm in the X-ghetto then so be it and the way that they ended the Black Panther marriage in full Ray Rice style showed me all I needed to know on that matter!

Currently Disney... AHEM I mean Marvel has killed off Wolverine, Namor and a few other mutants since they do not make movie money off of these FOX Studios controlled characters and if the sales for Storm's solo comic continue to decline she may be next!

Note: Wolverine and Namor both had sex with Storm written to straight up diss the Black Panther on purpose!

When the rumor that Afua Richardson may be placed on a Storm solo comic fell through and they went the standard issue route with the usual fanboy writers it all but sealed her fate and assured that I would not buy one issue of that comic!

If you are not making Storm appealing to black fans then you have to live with the shrinking fan bases that you always relied on and last I checked her comic was hovering over the cancellation block with super sagging sales!

The move to have her engage in a fistfight with her former husband T'challa who has more than enough street cred to sell his own solo comic and warrant A-list casting in Chadwick Boseman for a solo movie you lose me and many others that would have supported it with our revenue stream!

With that said... If you want o keep Storm in a pseudo white girl stasis then you better get more than enough white girls to pay her rent after the Black Panther fans disassociate themselves from her!

It's not hard to sell to black folks if you start off with common decency and an ounce of racial respect but if you want to insult us it will only go so far in this Instagram era where everybody now knows your personal business!

If you want Storm with white guys that is fine but you don't have to disrespect black men to do so and be so openly blatant about it in the process!

The Black Panther/Storm marriage exposed what most of us pretty much knew about the comic industry and it took Disney execs to bypass Marvel execs to get the Black Panther movie going if you read between the lines...

The M's in Mickey Mouse stand for MONEY and he aint trying to hear all that Fanbratti ish when it comes to getting that black dollar to help fund his theme parks and cruise ships!

Marvel: "I don't know if we can film that movie it's so hard..."

Mickey Mouse: "Shut the FRAK up I bought you out not the other way around now get your @$$ on the phone and get Chadwick Boseman in my office right now BEYOTCH!"

Marvel: "But... But... But..."

Mickey Mouse: "I don't giva a FRAK about your feelings towards black super heroes get that dude ready for his appearance at El Capitan Theater with Downey Jr. and Chris Evans this afternoon!"

Bye Storm... PEACE OUT!!!

OTHER SIDE OF THE TUNNEL - FLASH FICTION BY GERRENCE GEORGE

Posted by Gerrence George on April 21, 2017 at 4:30pm 0 Comments

She hated this part of the time travel process, but it was necessary. The G’s pressed against her coal colored skin and stretched her cheeks back past the point of pain. It hurt. Bad. But it was worth it. She pictured his face to help block the pain of traveling through the quantum tunnel. He was on the other side. The man who loved her, then tried to have her killed. He tried to hide in the past. That’s what he does, but it didn’t matter. “I’ll find you.” She thought, as she pressed the accelerator on her personal transport cycle, gritting her teeth in agony. “No matter what era, galaxy, or existence known to man you try to go to, I’ll find you. You can’t hide from me.”

She’s able to stand the pain because she knows a deeper pain awaits her in the other side of the tunnel. Her man. Her love, who she had given herself over to in every way, sent three enforcers to kill her an hour ago. But that was the mistake of men throughout the history of time, ego. He underestimated her… Continue

THE UNDERGROUND BY ROXANNE BLAND

Life as alpha of a werewolf pack is anything but predictable. But even Parker Berenson is surprised by the latest twist: he’s fallen in love with a space alien. Problem is, he suspects Melera, his sexy new flame, might be the serial killer terrorizing Seattle. Or maybe she isn’t. After all, just because she’s an interstellar assassin doesn’t mean she’s guilty.
