So, you've finished your novel, comic, film, whatever that's wonderful. What needs to happen next is to let people know about it. Sending out a press release is the next step. Yes, you can spread the word via Facebook and Twitter. But to reach those who aren't jacked in to social media, you'll need a traditional press release.

The great thing about press releases in the internet age is the potential reach your release can achieve. How far your release can go and who it will reach depends on how you distribute it. Now if you go it alone and effectively toss it to the wind in the hopes it will reach your audience, good luck with that. If you don't have your own publicist on staff, then you need to get access to someone who is experienced in writing press releases to at minimum edit your release if they don't write it themselves. Take their critiques of what you've written seriously and follow up on their suggestions>

Once you've got the release crafted for release, then you need to pick a press release service. There are many, many firms out there but the two I've used consistently with good penetration are PRWEB and Black PR. Now recognize when you use a service, you're going to have to pay them. They aren't going to write your release for you (and you don't want them to), but they'll make sure it's put into play to a degree you couldn't hope to achieve on your own. Now, the good news is; it's not terribly expensive for a basic release. Bad news; the deeper and larger penetration you want, the more it's going to cost. Still though it's not terribly expensive unless you're planning sustained penetration.

Bottom line: you want people to know about your work's availability? A press release must be part of your arsenal to get the word out.

And a succinct, clearly and well-written release.

Great advice. Hopefully, it's the kick in the  rear I need to actually write up a press release and send it out.

The best way to get that clear and well written release is to either hire or link up with someone who writes them professionally. If you can't pay them then at least make arrangements for quid pro quo (otherwise known as a 'reach around') for equal service you can provide them for their assistance. No one likes to work for free, but many will do so for fair trade. When you get to a position where you can pay them please do so! Definitely worth the money.

GREAT thread!  *salute*

Thanks. The aim is to put out info coalition members can actually put into play.

Even though my work is still in the making, I have been wondering which path to take once it is done. Thank You for sharing.

Wayne,
Glad to be of assistance. Here at the Coalition and the BSFS at large have already been down the path you're going (several times!) It just makes sense to pass off some of that knowledge. The key thing is to get the work done first so you can focus on getting it promoted.
SPC!

Can you suggest a play to begin looking for someone to hire to write a press release for a book series?

A 'play'? If you mean where can you find people to write your press releases here are tips on how to write your own. Keep in mind, you'll still need a pro to give your release a 'read' to help you tweak it.

As for 'where to look' for Public Relation people, start with local charitable organizations. Small to medium sized organizations will have at least one dedicated to PR. They may be available for freelance work or can point you to the PR people they refer to. Unless you have the money to do so, I'd say hold off on trying to hire a pr pro because good pr costs money. Other places to look for pr people is your local Community College or University. In their communications/journalism dept. there will be professors who teach this and again they may freelance for you or at least give your work a read if you strike up a beneficial relationship.

Do you have any specific places that you would recommend to have a press release written for them and for a press release distributor?

Also use this http://www.prlog.org/ it's free and they show you how to do a press release.

Thank you so much.

SKYCITY TALKRADIO

THE UNDERGROUND BY ROXANNE BLAND

Life as alpha of a werewolf pack is anything but predictable. But even Parker Berenson is surprised by the latest twist: he’s fallen in love with a space alien. Problem is, he suspects Melera, his sexy new flame, might be the serial killer terrorizing Seattle. Or maybe she isn’t. After all, just because she’s an interstellar assassin doesn’t mean she’s guilty.
