I've been penning a manuscript for over a decade that began as nothing more than a romance set in a fictional world. As I got older, and some suppose, more wiser... what I wanted out of the world I was creating became larger in scope.

The world I'd created became more than just a simple backdrop for my characters it began to take on a life of its own. And a need of its own.

The world became a realm. Then it became one of many and they demanded proper histories, proper mythologies that were all their own.

I was daunted by the idea of mythbuilding at first. The very idea of it smacked of heresy, I was raised Orthodox Catholic then converted to Islam at nineteen. Yes, I'd had a fascination with polytheism as a child, but the monotheistic beliefs I was raised with raised their hackles at me. Create your own gods and goddess, tales of how they and mystical and magical kind came into being. Who do you think you are? How dare you.

But the story that had been roiling around inside of me for years refused to quietly lay itself down to my conscience, and eventually, I came to realize that creating my own mythology had nothing to do with creating a new belief for myself. It is simply, in my opinion, artistic expression.

I would love to hear the thoughts of women with the same interests that I do. And I would also like to find readers for my work to gauge it's "interestingness" and "readability".

Hi Wamuhu

I too am a Bronxite writing speculative fiction mixing Orishas with Fringe Science.

World building is the hardest part of novel writing for me. It is the most rewarding too when it the character seem real in the world i have created for them.

Look forward to reading your work.

Hello, fellow Bronxite:

It has certainly been a long and strange road on my part, Robin. I didn't think myself capable of overcoming the fear of stigma and censure. I'm a first generation American, but my family's beliefs have been firmly rooted in Christianity for about a century. They don't really understand the fascination I have with what's considered pagan or occult. Or even wanting to learn about other "organized", much older religions.

You can find the first two chapters of my manuscript on INKSHARES. Click here.

May grace find you, and please let me know where I can find samples of your work as well.

You introduced me to a new term today. I had never heard the term mythopoeia even though I know it when I read it. I am glad you are were able to overcome your reservations and add your voice to the genre. Best of luck in the Nerdist competition!

That sounds familiar to me. My first novel was written over more than a decade. It was not something that I wanted to publish; it was just for me. So, there was no rush and I only wrote when I felt like focusing on Faélondul. However, the more people I let read the MS, the more prompted me to publish.

I have always loved Science Fiction and Fantasy. It was natural to create new worlds, species, deities, languages, etc. Speculative Fiction is my chosen genre (Epic Fantasy and Science Fantasy…with an EDGE). There are a lot of us out there and I love meeting more.

Now, I have nine novels written: six novels in the Epic genre, two in the SciFan genre, and one (almost) novella. I release them six months apart with four currently published.

I am looking forward to learning more about you and your work.

I recently read an article that talked about how authors sometimes spend too much time worrying about world building. Readers want to get to know your characters and their stories. They don't care as much about the backdrop and the history. I think it can be a tricky balance!

Apologies for the extreme delay in response, been bogged down with work (not writing primarily, unfortunately) the last eight months. Thank you for the encouragement, and wow. I look forward to reading your books.

Quite right, it is a delicate balance. I hope I've accomplished the feat, especially since the backdrop and histories I've created shape my characters in integral ways. They wouldn't be who they are without their unique cultures. It's what both glues them together and tears them apart -- :)

Kudos to you for forgeing beyond your hesitations.  Looking forward to reading it.

SKYCITY TALKRADIO

THE UNDERGROUND BY ROXANNE BLAND

Life as alpha of a werewolf pack is anything but predictable. But even Parker Berenson is surprised by the latest twist: he’s fallen in love with a space alien. Problem is, he suspects Melera, his sexy new flame, might be the serial killer terrorizing Seattle. Or maybe she isn’t. After all, just because she’s an interstellar assassin doesn’t mean she’s guilty.
