So, I like it when an author puts race in front of my eyes.  I enjoy visualizing what a character looks like, race and all.  When it's done correctly, the experience can deepen the reader's relationship with the character.  There are some people who say that showing race in this way is racist.  They enjoy reading or writing raceless, race free, or characters of color with little or no physical description. I almost turned around and walked away from Dragoncon. I waited for three hours in a line wrapped around the Sheraton Hotel. Both my husband and I were exhausted, hot, and tired.  What kept me going were the energetic people around me. They were dressed in costumes, laughed loudly, and were there to have a great time.
