CB’S POV: Trying to Get “Lost” Again (“Manifest”)

Montego Air Flight 828 takes off on a routine flight to New Your City, unexceptional except for a brief episode of extreme turbulence. When it reaches NYC airspace it is redirected to a nearby airfield, where the plane is immediately surrounded by armed military personnel and government representatives dressed in serious suits. The passengers want to know what is going on and they are informed their plane took off in April of 2013. It’s now November of 2018. Where have they been for the last…See More

CB’S POV: The Next Voice You Hear… (“Sorry to Bother You”)

It’s difficult to quickly describe Sorry to Bother You, starting with the title: is it a nod to a telemarketer’s lame excuse for trying to sell you something you neither want or need, or is it the filmmakers ironically talking to the audience, trying to jar them from their complacency? It’s definitely science…See More

"I had preconceived notions about this LADY ghostbusters but it proved me wrong. I'm a huge fan of original movies but this was a very funny and entertaining addition to the GB franchise."

"I actually liked this movie. I didn't feel that it was as bad as it was reviewed by some. This was supposed to be about a new class of Ghostbusters, hence them all being female. Now was Ray Winston a scientist like the rest of the guys, i…"

Calling a Spade a Mardonalian (Part 2)

Posted on March 21, 2008 at 8:51am 1 Comment

Sometimes, racism in SF is subtext rather than context. In E.E. Smith’s The Skylark of Space, the heroes are Earth’s best and brightest despite, when told by a malevolent entity there are many ways it could kill them, responding, “Name one!” Upon arrival on the planet Osnome they rescue an airship being attacked by flying monsters. The passengers of the ship are humanoids whose skin color is “a dark, livid… green.” In appreciation for their efforts the Terrans are given “slaves,” seven… Continue

In his essay “Why Blacks Should Read (and Write) Science Fiction” (in Sheree Thomas’ anthology Dark Matter: A Century of Speculative Fiction from the African Diaspora) Charles R. Saunders says, “The human imagination manifests itself in stories. Those same stories become legends, myths, the defining elements of a culture… We need to contribute to our culture’s overall mythology… and provide positive alternatives to the stereotypes that continue to plague us within that… Continue

THE UNDERGROUND BY ROXANNE BLAND

Life as alpha of a werewolf pack is anything but predictable. But even Parker Berenson is surprised by the latest twist: he’s fallen in love with a space alien. Problem is, he suspects Melera, his sexy new flame, might be the serial killer terrorizing Seattle. Or maybe she isn’t. After all, just because she’s an interstellar assassin doesn’t mean she’s guilty.
