I am a black male 38 yrs old, who is about to do what I have always talked about doing. Creating my own low budget high concept Action-scifi film company. I have been a scifi fan since age 5 when the 1975 tv show space 1999 blew me away. The early 80's and 90's japanese anime wave took me to the next level by showing me that cartoons can be a good source of adult entertainment with, anime's various concepts. The year 2000 and beyond. with todays acess to High defenition cameras and video editing equipmet any one with a good idea and a little bit of money can create their own production company. I love Hollywood big budget special effects movies. But just because Will smith is in a scifi movie does not make it a black scifi film. Black writers, producers and directors have to create our future and I am gonna give it a try.
I read your profile and I see your point. So, if Terence Howard, Spike Lee and Tyler Perry got together to write, direct and produce a science fiction film, would that be a true black sci-fi film?
So, you don't have ANY favorite black literature? I'd think you'd be all over the themes in literature to incorporate them into film, because they're universal themes about the African-American experience, i.e. Ralph Ellison's Invisible Man, Richard Wright's Native Son, Charles Johnson's Middle Passage, I could go on.
The Hollywood Black Film Fest treats filmmakers extremely well for the most part. There is that occasional misunderstanding. It's hard to make everyone happy, but we try and for the most part the majority of the filmmakers leave with a great experience. I'm not so familiar with Acalpulco which is now American Black Film Fest. They moved from Mexico several years back. I've heard they are well organized, but when they tried in L.A., it didn't go as well as planned. Not my experience...just what I heard around town. I think they went back to Miami where they had a huge amount of success.
Hey Jervis, sorry I'm just answering this. I've signed up, but never really followed up on this social network. Neither did I for Myspace or Facebook. Been really busy producing a short film and personal stuff. I'm gonna try to do better from here on out....anyway I digress...I haven't been to the black film market. ..but Hollywood Black Film Fest is a great way to network.
Jervis - Thank you for encouragement!! These two characters are secondary characters in a series that I am working on, but the positive response to these two has been overwhelming. This storyline gives a whole new meaning to terms "cat-people" and "dog-people". Best of luck with that sci-fi film company. I am digging you on getting black producers, directors and film makers in the sci-fi game.

Who owns the rights to most of the material, books, and music, and posters sold to school systems annually to expouse the values of the "Harlem Renaissance"? Are these publishers and distributors as Black as the content? Do due royalties go to the hires or estates of the folks served up as creative or historic icons? Or are these source of revenue leeching massive profits away from the community being educated?
This processing of "the New Negro" is still making money .....but for whom?
Not to mention how this nexus of schools, publishers and distributors, which tends to avoid indie Black owned operations, and pimps Black Culture when it comes to the money.…

I will get back to posting normally...one day. Each day is an extended nightmare; each day is not "normal." We're either in the middle or the edge of a whirlwind. No one remembers Paul Manafort was arrested last Friday. I guess that was the point of this madness. He manipulates the media…

Life as alpha of a werewolf pack is anything but predictable. But even Parker Berenson is surprised by the latest twist: he’s fallen in love with a space alien. Problem is, he suspects Melera, his sexy new flame, might be the serial killer terrorizing Seattle. Or maybe she isn’t. After all, just because she’s an interstellar assassin doesn’t mean she’s guilty.
