A Discussion on The Future of Black Sci Fi

I wrote a short essay today briefly discussing my thoughts on the paradigm of Black Sci Fi, specifically dealing with technology and future speculation. Anyone have any thoughts on the subject?

DESTRUCTION AND BRILLIANCE: THE PARADIGM OF BLACK SCI-FI

Disclaimer

My statements will often be in conflict with popular scientific opinions (which is not the same as the latest scientific research). Because this essay is not geared toward the academia crowd, I will make several claims without providing sources. This is because I have already done my research and I believe in your ability to do yours. It would also make this essay very long. However, please feel free to ask me for sources or debate points.

I also do not believe that Western physical science is the pinnacle of what has or can be achieved and I have no reason to, according to official peer-reviewed research. I believe that ancient science surpassed Western physical science. More specifically, I believe that Westernscience has not surpassed Melanoid (people with significant melanocytes [darker skin colors] and neuromelanin) science. Now that the disclaimer is out of the way, let’s talk about Science Fiction.

Two Types of Sci-Fi

Devastation

Western science is aggressive toward life.

I do not feel the need for in-depth discussion of the definition of Sci-Fi. Let us focus on the element of futuristic speculation. What is the future as depicted by the paradigm of Western science? Devastation. There are only a handfull of scenarios foreseen for Western White civilization: dystopia, the end of humans on Earth, or the former plus planetary colonization. And the fourth option is the perpetual recycle of the first and third scenarios.

If I really wanted to talk about the causes for the eventual end of humans on a particular planet, this essay would be several pages long. However everyone should be familiar with at least four: belligerent A.I., mutually assured nuclear destruction, ecosystem annihilation, and plague.

These scenarios all are caused by the progression of Western science. It aims to control and subvert–even destroy–nature. The air quality continuously drops. The world’s waters become increasingly inhabitable and unconsumable. The ecosystems’ balance is imbalanced. Humans’ suffer unnatural sickness directly because of it. Western science is aggressive toward life. And the Western world has no intention of changing its course, as this Yale University “Atmosphere, Ocean & Environmental Chan... Reduce human populations and slow 3rd World Economic Growth?! Obviously, they feel that some people are gonna have to stop polluting and it’s not going to be the Western world.

My question is this: why does the future necessitate bleakness? The answer is that it doesn’t.

Brilliance

I went to college to be a historian. I did not complete that degree path, but I never lost the love for history or the knowledge of how to research. In my three-and-a-half semesters in college, and even more years of independent research, I have never seen evidence of the fear or reality of a dystopian Melanoid (remember that word from the disclaimer?) civilization.Melanoid science has never been found to be aggressive toward life.

If you look at the records, Melanoid architecture was not rife with rife toxic materials. It used the natural materials in the surrounding area. Large-scale cities did not produce air pollution, ecological imbalance or chemical-related sicknesses. What Melanoid science did do was explore the workings of the universe and successfully ensure healthy futures for the next generations.

Feats of Melanoid Science

Megalithic Structures

I would like to begin winding down this essay, so I will briefly showcase some examples of Melanoid science. The most commonly known is that of megalithic structures (which Western science cannot currently reproduce). Take the Giza Pyramid complex. These massive structures were built without mortar–very important. They contained several standard, yet complex, mathematical measurements such as the Meter and Pi. They harnessed energy. How these structures were built is not known in the popular narrative of Western science. However, many including myself believe a gravity-manipulating sound technology was used. As the pictures below show, megalithic structures are global.

The Cosmos

Melanoid Science has long had expansive knowledge of the cosmos. Many people are familiar with the fact that the Dogon people were aware of the Sirius Star System (invisible star in there) for ages before Western science could even conceptualize its existence. We also did things like build cities and spiritual building complexes in line with the stars. I do not know why at the time.

Unified Perspective On Science

One of the most crucial features of Melanoid science is the successful realization that the physical realm is not the only realm. Melanoid science took a unified approach: the physical and metaphyical/spiritual realms were intertwined and not mutually exclusive. That is why in Melanoid civilizations the priests would be the scientists, would be the doctors, would be the physicists, would be the astronomers.

Walking On Water

It was crossable until a hurricane destroyed it in the 1400s.

Tying Into Sci-Fi Afrofuturism

In conclusion, I believe that Black Sci-Fi creators should be aware of an alternate to Western futuristic speculation and science and accordingly create worlds with these alternate elements. For one, it is directly relevant to our Melanoid lineage. Second, if nothing else, it would provide interesting new-ish narratives and could become a defining mark of Black Sci-Fi.

Please share your thoughts in the comments. If you want sources or more information and examples, feel free to ask. I apologize if this seemed long-winded. That is the historian in me coming out.

If you purchased a box of crayons only to discover that all the crayons were white, chances are you would return those crayons back to the store with some choice words for the manager. Fortunately, no store would sell you a box of all white crayons. Being sold a story with all white characters, however, is a different story. The point?

This cannot be emphasized enough. Write your own story and keep writing. Work hard to develop your own marketing and distribution strategies. Even if this means selling a few books at a time, your story is getting out. There is no other way. The greater number of people who accomplish this, the greater the impact this will have on the reading public. People will see for themselves what Hollywood executives and mainstream publishers are trying so hard to dismiss as impossible. Of all the various genres, science fiction is having a greater impact. Peace.

What type of story are you writing sister Lisa?

i love the concept of a "Unified Perspective on Science".  Giving me a few ideas for story framework.

I love scifi so much and i would dearly love to see more of "us" within the pages as well as on the big and small screens.  My creative writing instructor always said "if there's something you want to read, but it doesn't yet exist, then you should write it"   Professor Tom's words are proving themselves to be more and more true!

J R Cannon I don't remember what comedian it was (may have been Pryor), but someone examined sci-fi movies and noticed that the writers don't see Black people in the future lol.

Comment by J R Cannon on May 16, 2016 at 6:39pm

It is both disturbing and disappointing to look at science fiction today and not see many people of color living and sharing fully in those future worlds; and that those future worlds are so depressing in and of themselves. Because people in the entertainment industry don't see their peers putting more people of color in movies and shows, they're afraid to do it in their own movies. All this makes it so difficult for people of color to get their toe--not even their foot, just their toe!--in the door and have someone take a serious and honest look at their script, story, comic, etc.

I cannot "tag" people as I would do on Twitter or Facebook, so I will respond to everyone in a single comment.

First off, thanks for the responses and input everyone!

Jarvis Sheffield:

"...today's science fiction is tomorrow's science fact." Wow. I agree completely. It is crucial for us to not just ride the already established wave of Sci-Fi if we don't want Elysiums and Mad Maxes!

Mark Hill:

I firmly believe the destruction of knowledge was one of the worst thing to happen to us. It's annoying too. But I am with you in the potential to gain the knowledge back. As a matter of fact, I believe it is inevitable. Have you ever read Soul Traveler by Albert Taylor?

Andre Saunders:
Thank you! Yes, we could evolve the entirety of Black fictional storytelling simply by digging deep into our cultural achievements.
I'm looking forward to your graphic novel series. Any estimation on a release date?

Patricia L Graham:
I like how you phrased it as "holistic narratives". Because fiction has such a deep psychological impact on people, a holistic psychology would be wonderful.

Comment by Patricia L Graham on May 16, 2016 at 1:25pm

Good to get a creative shake up sometimes and right now feels like a good time to have one given everything going on around us, much of it shrieking toxic disaster and megadeath for real.  The western model for all things seems like the only bandwagon world over with a prevailing mentality of if you can't beat them join them.  Alternatives mean having longterm strategies like nature's way and working with nature instead of simply pollute and loot that's largely been going on for centuries.  Progression wreaks exploitation.  Finding new holistic narratives from these scenarios - not easy but doable.  Right now everything feels trapped.  Would love to let it breathe ...

Comment by Andre Saunders on May 16, 2016 at 9:27am

Great essay! I totally agree. I believe a new narrative is needed, not only sci-fi, but all of our fictional storytelling that underscores and promotes the level of brilliance, spirit and work needed in creating the first and purest of technologies. A culture's power lies at its uniqueness, which in turn drives its technology. Looking through a different lens (mental and spiritual) can bring about a creative revolution in thought, design and development.

I am currently working on an Pan-African action, scifi/fantasy graphic novel series entitled Godhead, starting with the first book entitled PARTS. I would like to utilize worldwide Pan-African(Natural) perspectives and sciences of both the past and present, material and spiritual, integrating speculative creation myth/fiction and contemporary themes.

I would like to get/hear more of your views on a universal holistic unified sci-fi perceptive, past and present.

Again, great article!

Interesting, very interesting.I believe that we once had and utilized this knowledge but it has become something of science fiction nowadays but does not mean it cannot be regained. I've also believed in the metaphysical and wanted to know more about it so if not me someone else can spread the knowledge to a people who are in limbo.

I read the article and think you have some valid points.

You were right that over 90% of future presumptions in SciFi are that of negativity and destruction.

I think that is why it is incumbent on us to tell our own tales from our point of view. I tell people all the time that today's science fiction is tomorrow's science fact. Given that, it is essential for us to be involved in science fiction and science to assure our presence and point of view, as well as reap the benefits of any creations or solutions that come out of that participation.
