Sci-Fi Writer Ursula K Le Guin launches broadside on Amazon's 'sell it fast, sell it cheap' policy

The grande dame of fantasy Ursula K Le Guin has weighed in forcefully to the debate about Amazon’s role in publishing. In a blogpost on the site Book View Cafe, entitled “Up the Amazon with the BS Machine, or Why I Keep Asking You Not to Buy Books from Amazon”, the American author has spoken out against what she describes as the company’s increasing influence not only on the bookselling market but also on which books get published, promoted and read. Her fierce conclusion is: “Every book purchase made from Amazon is a vote for a culture without content and without contentment.”

My response again; I appreciate the comments by both Mia Mitns, and Kenneth Andre Brown Sr. However, the massive company knew for its mail ordering; moreover do not promise any author of how well, he or she will sell their books. The one concept I admire all in all about Amazon in conjointly with Createspace Publishing; the company has some admirable set up operations, which could be of some benefit, for writers to get their literary feet wet in the wide oceanic view of writing, and publishing. Peace to us all. Have a good day!

I don't agree.  I feel Amazon helped open up the competition so there are more books to consider than just major and indie publishers.   In the end, the readers end up choosing what they want to read.  Yeah, they could be influenced by Amazon's rankings but they can just as easily go to the NY Times best sellers and other lists for the same amount of influence.

This just sounds like she is mad that readers want to read certain books she doesn't consider to be good "literature."

Very  informative; then again I had read of what a particular author had commented of how Amazon has became greedier, yet an author may find he, or she kneeling down to the publishing giants regardless.

I have quite a few issues of my own with Amazon which they are well acquainted with and which I feel are serious. This is also too obviously a case of not just what you are doing but how you do it. Also, wiping out all competition in this global empire building smacks of the sort of control the Romans had and if you're a Jamaican like me, Babylon is still in sway for the time being. A lot of people are asking about how they account for their rankings, because quite simply it should only be a matter for Amazon staff to understand and everyone else to live by ... Where are the lawyers on this? More transparency is urgently needed on all these prominent self-publishing platforms and I believe it is high time the DOJ and the UK's DCMS dealt with these companies and their practices.
