ABYSSIANIA MEDIA GROUP® wishes everyone a Good Day! This is a visual presentation of my East Coast Black Age of Comics Convention 2018 Experience. The excursion to Philadelphia from Los Angeles was a very trying and tiring one. We arrived in Philadelphia on Friday rainy and cloudy morning that turned cooler by evening. Wanted to make the Glyph Comics Awards held at the convention site Tech-Freire Charter High School but health issues due to the cool weather made that a no show for the AMG crew. We were kind of expecting LATE Spring weather and it turned out to be EARLY spring weather.

But on that rainy May 19th Saturday morning it was on! We arrived there before 10 AM and we were assigned our tables, had a mix-up with Black Lighting creator Tony Isabella but got that worked out. I was just glad I got to say a few words to him even if it was out of a confused state (mine). We set up in the main room, saw the positive and most of all creative forces that were out there as friends colleagues and competition. Shout out to Mishindo Kuumba I and his crew, shout out to N. Steven Harris, shout out to Jerome Wolford, shout out to Fari-Raqub & King VII, shout out to Roye Okupe and the YouNeek Studios crew, shout out to my brother from another mother and ECBACC organizer,  Akinseye Brown, shout out to ECBACC President Yumi Odom, most of all shout out to Glyph Award Winner Greg Anderson-Elyseé for is “Nana the Were-Spider.”

The real highlight of the day was the Afri-Coz Play Contest featuring peeps in their favorite comic character costume. There were a lot of favorites and I tried to feature them in the gallery within the latest AMG blog. They may also be seen on ABYSSINIA MEDIA GROUP®'s Facebook, Instagram and Twitter pages. Not to mention at the actual East Coast Black Age of Comics Convention website – http://ECBACC.COM. We had a wonderful full day but missed the group picture at the end because we were on a tight schedule.

The next day fortunately we were blessed to arrive at Reading Terminal Market after attending worship service to see the last remnants of the Black age of comic convention organizer's breakfast. The ECBACC Breakfast event had ended but we arrived there just in time before the leadership stepped out the door. These pictures featured in the “AMG at the Philadelphia ECBACC 2018 Gallery” in the blog featured at HERE. Much love to all the organizers, much love to all my fellow retailers, most of all looking forward to attending the East Coast Black Age of Comics Convention next year in May 2019.

If you have Netflix and had the chance to check out THE CLOVERFIELD PARADOX, a little FYI is that it was directed by seasoned Nigerian born director by the name of JULIUS ONAH. To his credit are films such as "Don't Look Back"(2008), "The Girl Is in Trouble"(2015) and a forthcoming project sometime this year titled "Luce". This tie in to the Cloverfield Universe is pretty well done and centers around British Black Actress Gugu Mbatha-Raw and her damaged family. The inclusion of David Oyelowo as the commander had me hooked, then there is the ALTERNATE REALITY mix. OUTSTANDING if you have not had a chance to check out.

BLACK PANTHER the ALBUM

Glad to see this project being a little less American and more a AFRICAN DIASPORIAN musical project. I cannot wait to hear. So is the BLACK PANTHER movie the catalyst that ignites the SPIRIT toward unitfying the children and lost children of the African continent worldwide? This project drops 2/9/2018

Another post Black Panther must see for me is Madeleine L'Engle's A Wrinkle in Time, THE DISNEY MOVIE. I must confess that this project has my heart for two reasons. First is the FACT that this book got me to literally READ on the level of pure enjoyment as a elementary school child. It was my FIRST Science Fiction story ever, was relatable as the main character was MY age at the time. A book was assigned to me by a teacher, a black woman named Mrs. Garrett whom at the time was one of the many teachers (Black) at my school in Oakland, Cali whom I believe took her job for teaching young black children SERIOUSLY. She had a reading list to which we were given a choice of many books at 3rd/4th grade level and I out the blue choose this one just to get her off my back. After forcing the first few chapters, my attention begin to focus when the group encountered the tesseract. I read the entire book in a week and it inspired me to begin to WRITE my own Sci Fi story.

SECOND reason I must see this is that it is directed by "QUEEN SUGAR" director Ava DuVernay my film shero. This is her time showing her hand at a pure IMAGINARY direction which looks better than AMAZING YO! I am used to her work with the REAL and the TRUE which has (to me) all been cinematically OUTSTANDING. Now this YO! Is 2018 going to be the year I have to create a budget for MUST SEE movies? At least in the first three month is looks like..... Enjoy

Oh Yeah FYI: "A Wrinkle in Time", the winner of the 1963 Newbery Medal, celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2013 and continues to thrive. It holds the ranking by many critics as one of the most frequently banned novels of all time.

VoCo allows you to change words in a voiceover simply by typing new words. Presented live during the Adobe MAX 2016 Sneak Peeks.

In-spite of the OBVIOUS problems this can cause I may use this for some online podcast/ instructional video medium presentations I wish to do. OUTSTANDING! Cool to see Jordan Peele, the other half of "Key and Peele" involved in this.

Miles Davis the Movie with Don Cheadle

Don Cheadle portrays One of my FAV Traditional JAZZ Musicians MILES DAVIS. Looks to be great and what I expected. MILES DAVIS to me represented the FIRST of a new generation of BLACK MEN who had the attitude, the blessings to be raised, nurtured by parents and a community that were not held back by economic and/or mental slavery issues. understood and knew what power he had and how to weld it in 1950s-60s.

This week’s discussion topic is Cyberfunk and the subgenres Cypherfunk and Biofunk. The definitions of the three Categories of African American speculative science fiction is as follows

Cyberfunk - Like the genre from which it gains inspiration, Cyberpunk, Cyberfunk is a genre of Speculative Fiction centered on the transformative effects of advanced science, information technology, computers and networks (“cyber”) coupled with a breakdown or radical change in the social order. Unlike Cyberpunk, however, Cyberfunk is expressed through an Afrikan / Black lens (“funk”). Often possessing a dark, gritty and cynical tone, Cyberfunk includes elements of Film Noir, hard-boiled Detective Fiction and postmodern deconstruction.

Cypherfunk - is any African activist advocating widespread use of strong cryptography, the art of writing or solving codes as a route to social and political change. Cypherfunkateers communicate through some type of online electronic mailing list, informal groups aimed to achieve privacy and security through proactive use of cryptography. Cypherfunks as with their Cypherpunk counterparts, have been engaged in an active movement since the late 1980s.

Biofunk - is a subgenre of African American speculative science fiction that focuses on biotechnology. It is derived from cyberpunk/cyberfunk, but focuses on the implications A derivative of cyberfunk involving bio-hackers, mega-corporations, and oppressive government agencies that manipulate human DNA. Most often keeping with the dark atmosphere of cyberfunk, biofunk generally examines the dark side of genetic engineering and represents the low side of biotechnology. Common ideas of this sub-genre are biotechnologies in the context of the gap between the rich and poor, the value and nature of life and humanity, human enhancement, misusage of biotechnologies for social control and profit.

The Questions I pose to my creative writers and artists are:

1) Out of these three sci-fi genres defined above, which could bring forth greater creative expression, storytelling, timing, design and environment in your work?
2) Since the beginning of Black History Month we have discussed AFROFUTURISM, ROCOCA, STEAMFUNK, and DIESELFUNK. Which combination with CYBERFUNK (or any of its subgenres) would inspire creative motivation and why?

For me, I believe the BIOFUNK genre appeals to my creative energies best because it is the most diverse, subjective and timeless. Stories of cures for cancer, AIDS, mental illness and other more HUMAN issue can be addressed. I believe I could communicate the character’s anxiety of self, society and/or corporate misuse, through mood and relating it with the struggles african americans on both north and south continental scale. My second choice would be creating a CYPHERFUNK story. It would be a “challenge” but I am attracted to the idea of motivating social change through African centered GLYPHS, codes and the world wide web.

If I ever enter into a project involving a combination of genres, I believe my first choice would be a time traveling CYPHERFUNK/CYBERFUNK story. The characters would travel through time somehow to the STEAMFUNK era and for some unfortunate reason one of them would be trapped there for a minute. A bit “Octavia Butler” - ish, yes I know but I believe I could swing it to make it completely different yawn. Well, hopefully more than a yawn…. LOL.

Your thoughts, creative BSFS friendz, fanboiz and fangirlz, Afrikanist and Five per Centerz!

Queen mother Angela Bassett is a collective community favorite on the small and silver screens, playing some of our all-time favorite characters. Thanks to Bryan Fuller’s announcement as show runner for the new Star Trek television series reboot, the esteemed actress might be the franchise’s second black woman to playa Starfleet captain. Madge Sinclair was the first woman and black actor on screen as captain of the USS Saratoga. The show will be available on CBS All Access, the network’s online streaming service, in 2017.

Fuller is no stranger to the Star Trek universe. At the beginning of his TV career, one of his first gigs was writing episodes for Star Trek: Deep Space Nine. He then moved on to the Voyagerseries. A true fan of the show growing up, Fuller told EW, “My very first experience of Star Trek is my oldest brother turning off all the lights in the house and flying his model of a D7 Class Klingon Battle Cruiser through the darkened halls…It is without exaggeration a dream come true to be crafting a brand-new iteration of Star Trek with fellow franchise alum Alex Kurtzman and boldly going where no Star Trek series has gone before.”

Fuller, creator of Hannibal and Pushing Daisies, is a hire that the Trekkie community is excited about because of his passion for the show and it’s possibilities. Casting for Star Trek has not been announced, although he says Bassett would be his pick.

During an interview in 2013 he shared his idea of a dream cast for a Star Trekshow. “I want Angela Bassett to be the captain, that’s who I would love to have, you know Captain Angela Bassett and First Officer Rosario Dawson. I would love to do that version of the show but that’s in the future to be told.”

The blerd Trekkie community is crossing their fingers that Fuller hasn’t forgotten his dream now that he’s landed the position, starting the hashtag #CaptainAngelaBassett.

Time will only tell whether Bassett will be recording captain’s logs on her own starship in 2017. It never hurts to dream, and “fancasts” are making more of an impact than ever in the age of social media.
