I'm converting one of my stories a sci-fi romance, Naya's Invasion, to a screenplay now. It is exciting that they have this opportunity.
Fascinating Prospects.
Mia, I think you have a much better chance of success with a story with romance. The TV One audience is hooked on that, so go for it! I'm getting the sense, if you look at the description of their previous films and what they're looking for, that sci fi and horror ain't really in the mix...unless its religion related. Not getting the complex Afrofuturism vibe off of this. Anyone see any of the films they've produced? "Contemporary, engaging and relatable" kind of seems to red flag as Family Values Drama or Romantic Comedy in a vein we've seen again and again. I could be wrong. Maybe they won't know to do something different until they see it submitted to them. But we always have such an uphill battle to get folks in our own community to appreciate and accept Black Sci Fi. It would be nice to see the genre listed and encouraged.
Agree, on all accounts.

I guess I'll see if they except it. With the success of "Sleepy Hollow" they might be more open to sci-fi/paranormal stuff. My sci-fi is a romance, so that might also help them to consider it. I'm hoping it will stick out among all of the romantic comedy.

Absolutely submit, Mia, and good luck! We can only hope and pray that Sleepy Hollow has made some foray, though it's not sci fi. (I write reviews of it for horror-writers.net and on my on blog BTW). My stuff is feature length, darker, and more violent than I think they want, otherwise I'd throw something their way. I don't think my cursing-up-a-blue-streak black female protagonist opposite a murderous multi-dimensional being that pulls no stops against a multi ethnic cast is exactly what they're looking for! HA!
Mia, if you want to read my more recent Sleepy Hollow reviews, check out my blog http://nfrenzy.blogspot.com/
I'm a fan, but like many of the other SH fans on Black Twitter, we felt it lost its way Second Season (except for the Mama ep and the finale).

Reference material...
Your best bet it is to write a screenplay about a young girl that sings in the gospel choir and hooks up with a bad boy that leads her down the wrong path and estranged from her family!
Throw in some drug addiction scenes and baby mama's drama after she has his love child and then kicks him to the curb in a great big exaggerated throw them pots and pans signifying way before the grand finale where she rejoins the church and lives happily ever after!
Demographics demographics demographics...
Your premiere will probably be placed right in between reruns of Martin and Love That Girl by default! Lol
Still 5 G's is 5 G's go get dat money!!!
carry on...
HA! And 100% on target

Oh I almost forgot...
You also want to specify who the light skinned and dark skinned cast members are so that you can strategically pit them against each other!
i.e. make the leading lady light skinned or just shy of carmel coated and make the thug life living boyfriend dark skinned with quite a few prison tattoos!
There should also be cast members designated to always be angry about something and talking loud for no reason other than reasons!
Basically just jack a Tyler Perry movie script and change the names of the characters and you are good to go for the $5,000!
$5,000 is enough for a down payment on a compact SUV so spend it wisely fam... I mean why buy a high end computer and high end software when TVOne is not exactly asking for a black sci-fi epic that requires a lot of RAM and cgi special effects!
And on the off chance that your script makes millions of dollars at least you have that $5,000 to buy that new Playstation and a TV screen big enough to play it on along with chips and salsa... Residual income is not an option at TVOne at least not that we know of!
Excellently stated... Black TV is butt backwards and behind on the times.

Life as alpha of a werewolf pack is anything but predictable. But even Parker Berenson is surprised by the latest twist: he’s fallen in love with a space alien. Problem is, he suspects Melera, his sexy new flame, might be the serial killer terrorizing Seattle. Or maybe she isn’t. After all, just because she’s an interstellar assassin doesn’t mean she’s guilty.
