Young Justice: The cancellation of a great series but with the same old BS....

As usual, Cartoon Network establishes an excellently written superhero series both adults and children can enjoy. In this case, the young heroes are not only allowed to experience real pain and emotions of growing up, but to actually 'grow up' physically in the process. Even the Superman clone 'Superboy' who's growth stopped at his late teens was allowed to mature mentally.

After watching the series finale (be advised, there will be spoilers), the bad guys for the most part are either completely defeated or have been pushed back far enough to engage in new machinations against the Justice League. Typically, with all that in mind Cartoon Network has cancelled the series.

The finale shows how certain characters lose cherished friends and lovers (wow, they did that in a kid's show?) But also show how new relationships are formed as new members replenish the ranks. I particularly liked how Black Lightning and Virgil Hawkins (later to become 'Static') were teamed for a mission and upon its success, Lightning offered to mentor the young hero. Now that the show is cancelled, we'll never get to see that relationship develop.

One thing that always bothered me about this show was how when everyone was 'hooking up' as the team developed, no female member of the team even cast a glance at 'Aqua Lad'. Other than having a whack name, he was the prime pick of Aquaman to represent Atlantis. When it came time to lead the initial version of the team it was he not Robin, the Batman chose (forget he whupped everyone on the team including the Martian and the Kryptonian clone!) Not to mention he was the most mature member of the team. So a teenaged boy who's tall, handsome, athletic and is the leader of a team isn't attractive to young females? You aren't if you're black apparently.

Only once was any mention by a female YJ team member as having an interest in Aqua Lad and that was when Icon's partner Rocket first joined. However, no effort was made to even show anything ever happened on that front. It was even suggested that she instead went out with Robin/Nightwing at a later time. Hell even Aqua Lad's 'own kind' (he's half human/atlantean) couldn't bring themselves to pick him as the atlantean girl he loved picked the guy Aqua Lad beat to get the top spot (damn a brother can't get props even for winning?)

What I thought was equally illogical was at the end how the character Artemis after spending years in hiding with 'Calder' (Aqua Lad) immediately jumped back into the arms of her junior high sweetheart 'Kid Flash' like nothing happened and then picked up with his younger successor after he was killed. So you mean to say that spending years with Calder in hostile territory as his 'right hand girl', no intimate relationship was cultivated? Really? Hell, even the Martian became lovers with a full-blooded Atlantean though he looked like a green 'pufferfish'

If being a 'black male' is so repellent to females of all species, how did Calder's Atlantean Mother succumb to the charms of his supervillain father 'The Black Manta'? (and no he didn't rape her or shoot her with a 'knock-up' dart!) In fact, the only other brother in YJ who was able to hook up was Guardian yet he was a big whiny *&^% who nearly drove his paramour Bumble Bee away. I guess Calder had to pay for Jon Stewart's (Green Lantern) ability to hook up with human and alien females everywhere he went in the universe (the only male in DC Universe who rivals Batman....) I guess Stewart used up all his 'attraction potential'. 'Sorry bruh', but only one brother at a time can get the girls in this universe....' Oh and all the Native American, Asian and Hispanic dudes in the show, yall ^!**@#$ don't get so much as a nibble!

Other than that, the series will be missed. Too bad there isn't another outlet on cable with the depth of viewership and pockets CN has so we could get shows of its caliber on and keep them on a while longer.

This seems to be their pattern with these shows. They'll create a show so amazing that it was lightning in a bottle and then kill it for something silly and kid oriented because they was still alot of story that needed to be told. I loved the black lightning and static team up and it was sad that kid flash got killed like that but artemis getting with impulse who is the new kid flash seems kind of whack to me I mean talk about keepin it in the family lol.

Calder hadn't had a romantic interest since the love of his life was killed five years ago but you're right out of all the women that populated young justice no one would get with aqualad but my question is who would be compatible with him? Aqualad is a strong and focused leader he would need a woman to be his equal.

It's sad to see young justice go my saturdays are gonna suck now I'm gonna have to put that enthusiasm I had for young justice and put it into my own comics.

There is a pattern. Here it is: business. Cartoons are expensive and pretty much since the 80's have generally been nothing more than 30 minute ads for merchandise. That's where the real money is. Have you asked yourself why we've had sooo many series/seasons of Ben 10 but only limited runs of Justice League/Justice League Unlimited, Thundercats and others? Its simple. Cartoon Network pretty much own Ben 10 and get a nice cut of the licensing and merchandising. These other shows are shows that they order and pay for without getting a cut.

Interesting!  You know, we can't be mad because we don't control to an extent what the air.  However, I have an idea how us view of Young Justice and Green Lantern.  Let's do this, lets send a email, a small one explaining to Cartoon Network that we are displeased about cancelling this shows and tell them that if we don't hear about a new season coming in the very near future, we a viewers will  choose not to watch anything on C.N.  How you fight them is by hitting them in their pockets.  And how you do that is by not viewing because that's how they make money.  The more viewers, the more revenue they earn.  We choose not the view, they lose money.  So lets put this in action, especially when that punk assed Teen Titan's start up next month.  What do you all think?

I have never seen this show. It looks like it was exciting and broke much ground. I'd rather put my focus on that than the negative aspects.

The negative aspect being that African-Americans do not control the studio and so the stories and scripts are at the mercy of the decision making process of non-blacks. With that reality, nonsense like asexual team leaders not being considered as a romantic interest by non-Black females characters is to be expected.

The positive is that there are ANY Black superheroes in an animated series at all is a huge progression from the animated shows I grew up on. This is something I'd prefer to put my attention on.

I personally want to see us own our properties/creations and control them on a much broader scale.

I have so much respect for Nollywood. They make their own media  and buy it as well.

One day we will get out of sharecropping mode and fulfill our potential. No disrespect to anymore.

The things you mentioned seem to be a great reason for the demise if you ask me. Logically speaking, illogical writing about relationships in an age were viewers are more affluent and more in the know about Black/Black and Black/any other race interracial relationships and far more accepting of them than was shown on this show, it isn't hard to see why it didn't really connect with the younger fans. That aside, any show with more advantages than negatives should be allowed at least a little more time to build an audience.

At least they didn't make him a 'gay' Black man. That would have been too much.

"Sharecropping mode"  Wow, that is so apt.  It is true, eventually we will have to create and own our own platform. Your mention of Nollywood and what the Nigerians have created and accomplished is something we have got to look at and learn from. I remember years ago Tony Brown tried to promote something like Nollywood and many of the Black celebrities wanted to create "a Hollywood within Hollywood" instead . Well, we now know the consequences of this game plan. This thread says it all.

The mention of 'business' is a major factor as to why more intelligent shows get bumped from CN for more kiddie fare. This model became highly evident back when cartoons migrated from the big screen to television during the 1950's. Just like any television program, cartoons and anime' are primarily vehicles to sell ad time. In the '80's the model was perfected when Japanese toy companies like Bandai broke into the US market with shows like 'Voltron', 'Thundercats', 'G.I. Joe', etc. Initially all such cartoons had fairly sophisticated storylines but as their popularity and audiences grew, the push for more revenues came by 'toning' more mature plots down to get more children's eyes on the small screen. Then, more ad time for 'weapons grade' sugary cereals, toys and other merchandise associated with the shows were able to be sold. Syndication in the '80's became more valuable than original runs because more affiliate stations could play the programs thus adding nearly endless revenue streams.

It's really all about who they think their audience is and far as CN is concerned it's the 8 - 12 year old demographic. That's who they're shooting for and that's all they care about. What it's going to come down to if you want more mature fare in cartoons that last for more than two seasons, a network dedicated to an older audience will have to be established. However, the problem is how to generate revenues in numbers which are profitable enough to support such an endeavor. Unless little kids are involved, adults don't fork over for sugary cereals and toys (though they do buy models and swag.) Unfortunately, the most successful means of generating revenues has been through advertising. Few people want to pay subscription fees and even then those don't generate the same volume of income from advertising.

Then again, the 'Bollywood'/'Nollywood' option is a good one. Problem is trying to do that in the US is problematic. The main one is it's bloody well expensive to do even though equipment costs have fallen significantly. You still have to pay people and that's not cheap. Worst of all, if you do build up a successful venture someone will come along and offer you several metric tons of cash for it whereby after the sale they'll drive it into the ground. One thing is certain, we do need to do something if than for no more to make sure the 'Aqua Lads' out there get a fair shot at winning the fair damsel's hand!

-i loved this show (except a few things, but we won't go there) .but yes,i agree whole hardheartedly that black people do need to create our own media and have our own outlets instead .see, white people control American media and are always worrying about money and making their own happy ,neglecting everyone else.when they have people of color in something, its either to get our money or so they can sleep at night knowing (or deluding themselves into thinking )they aren't racist or prejudice .

I have a bunch of mixed feelings about the show and the way/reasons its gone. As for controlling our media, there are a ton of other factors to consider. We have no control over major distribution outlets. So we are always going to have to go to a major distributor to get that major outlet push. I always tell people that all these "moguls" in Hip Hop dropped the ball in the 90's by not coming together and forming one giant distribution company for the express purpose of distributing Hip Hop and R&B. To this day its something they still have zero control of.

This is what has to happen with our own media and intellectual properties. The trick is to maintain control and create avenues for distribution.

Very insitefull about Calder not being in a relationship which always kinda bothered me as well...

True to form when the shows come the characterizations of African-Americans in Super Heroes tv shows. I remember quite well years ago, when Bill Cosby stated in Jet magazine that hollywood and the other tv shows donot want to have positive role models on televisons reqarding African-Americans. When I watched the last episode of Aquaman when the Black Manta was exposed as being African-American; I was totally shocked. There was never an explanation to this as well.  We have to create our own. Be at peace and write, draw and create.

Was he being drugged? If so, it was the simplest scene he could imagine.Whoever was trying this was extremely stupid or extremely powerful. He'd find out soon enough.

CFP: Images of Blackness in Graphic Novels, Past and Future (Extension to 3/31/18)

by Brian Yates

This edited volume will offer an opportunity for authors to investigate the ways in which blackness is reimagined in both mainstream and independent comics. Specifically, I propose responding to the following questions: What are the ways in which heroism is redefined by black characters? How are black futures reimagined? What gendered arguments are made through this medium? What are the challenges in presenting to black audiences in this largely white genre? How do the creators depict the continent of Africa and/or communities in the African Diaspora? How are black bodies presented in graphic comics and novels? Finally, how are themes of social justice specific to black communities presented in this…

THE UNDERGROUND BY ROXANNE BLAND

Life as alpha of a werewolf pack is anything but predictable. But even Parker Berenson is surprised by the latest twist: he’s fallen in love with a space alien. Problem is, he suspects Melera, his sexy new flame, might be the serial killer terrorizing Seattle. Or maybe she isn’t. After all, just because she’s an interstellar assassin doesn’t mean she’s guilty.
