The space elevator is as stupid as being on top of a tall building with a laptop and plugging in via a 1/4 mile long extension cord to a socket on the first floor. Where's a transporter when you need one?
Microwaving the sun's energy back to earth is a bit more practical and doable.
So I imagined a large space wheel with solar arrays spanning across its "doughnut hole" and a huge dish on the bottom that beams energy and objects down to a matching earth bound wheel. The electronic tether is luminous, of course.
The next level is energy erupting out of the top of pyramids and there appearing a mega city hovering above, the shape of inverted pyramids.
