Physicists who specialize in cosmology and quantum mechanics theorize that on the quantum level there is an infinite number of universes and an infinite number of possible histories within each universe for any event. What that means in practical terms is that every possible outcome or reality is possible. This particular history or reality as we know it is one of an infinite number. We just so happen to exist in this particular one, our reality. Instead of being who you are and where you are in this space and time it is just as likely that you could be someone else living here or in say the jungles of Borneo. It is just as likely that instead of reading this page now you could be an Indian sitting in the Amazon rain forest pondering the nighttime sky. Alternatively, you could be in any other space anywhere in the Universe. Now that is something to wrap your brain around and ponder! When people say all things are possible and that you can grow up to be anything you want to be it is the absolute truth. At least it is on the quantum level. Exciting things are happening now! There is the very exciting news that the Higgs Boson has been documented, its footprint left for us to see and examine. We cannot see Higgs but we can see evidence of its existence. It is similar to seeing the evidence that dinosaurs existed millions of years ago without seeing them walking around. We can be certain that dinosaurs existed by the remnants of bones and fossilized skeletons that are uncovered on a routine basis. Higgs as theorized shows how matter is able to obtain mass. Some call it the GOD particle. If not for Higgs, stars, galaxies and beings like you and me could not exist. Without Higgs, matter without mass would forever zip throughout the Universe, unable to form complex structures such as spiders or elephants or human beings living on planet earth. I was reading today that the oldest known galaxy has been observed. This galaxy called a spiral galaxy and labeled BX442 is about 10.7 billion light years away from Earth. That is truly a long long time ago in a place far far away! A time before the dinosaurs. A time before the earth even existed! Due to its extreme distance, BX442 is the earliest confirmed spiral galaxy in the Universe. Perhaps there are beings there that also wonder about the universe and how it became to be what it is today. The infinite history theory postulates that I could just have easily existed in that galaxy as I do now in our own home Milky Way galaxy. If that had happened, I would not be here today typing away or in my case pecking away!
Harold Washington had been elected the Mayor of Chicago! Harold, as he liked to be called was the first African American to hold that office. Many people thought that such a thing was an impossibility. Remember infinite possibilities are real! After he was elected, many people thought that the city was going to go to the proverbial Hell in a hand basket. However, in fact it did not. The trains still ran on time, and the Chicago River still flowed very nicely thank you very much! However, his political enemies did everything in their power to see to it that he did not succeed. I think they would have had the river stop flowing if they could. Do you see any parallels to today’s national political climate? That is another story waiting to be told! Anyway, Harold had finally vanquished his political foes! He was on a roll! Then he had a heart attack and died in his office at City Hall. I feel that as a society we must come to grips with the racial, ethnic and religious differences that continue divide us. To cause us to turn a deaf ear on those that appear to be different from us.
The political discourse in our great country has reached a deafening roar. No one is listening only shouting louder so that their voice is heard their point of view highlighted. Both sides seem to think that anything goes and it is ok to demonize the other guy, the other side. We are on the good side, the right side. They are all wrong their motives suspect. There has to be a better way, a more civil discourse.
I wonder what if. What if race was no longer a factor in our society? What if people were given a choice to belong to one race? Would things be different? What if in the not so distant past, race, religion and ethnic differences were eliminated. Can such a thing really happen? The infinite history theory says absolutely it can. In fact, it most assuredly already has.
