June 25, 2011, Bronx, NY]-----Too often we see our African-America youths portrayed on television as under-achievers, athletes behaving badly, thugged out rappers or worse.

But there is a whole other side you do not see on the evening news or in magazines. The side where our children are achieving extraordinary things. Here is one example where excellence is exemplified.

In this article by Will Bradford titled 13-Year-Old Bronx Prodigy Heads to College, young Autum Shante of the Bronx, New York is on her way to college. Yes higher learning at the tender age of 13.

When most girls are still in Middle Girl and their biggest worry might be a fight with their BFF, Shante has to manuever and adjust to the stresses of freshman year at the University Of Connecticut.

But this is no ordinary girl. Autum, reportedly speaks 3 languages (Spanish, Swahili and Arabic) is also a poet, who already goes on many speaking engagements to showcase her poetry in spoken word and scored higher on her IQ tests than most college students--with a score of 149.

All this and she never had a traditional education. Her father, Ben Ashanti, reportedly home schooled Autum.
