Just discovered a book by Juliet McKenna called Southern Fire. It's main protagonists is a black warrior. I was pleasantly surprised. I haven't read it but it seems pretty good. I tend to get nervous when I see black characters in novels by white authors. Oftentimes, as in my ebuddy's story Time Masters, there is that magical negro thing happening. But just as often the story is written by a racially-savvy soul who just wants to tell a good story and who doesn't dishonor blacks. The funny thing is I often get nervous writing stories with white characters.Anyway, this post is a shout-out to this book and to all white authors who write about black folks. Let's hope we get as famous writing about ourselves as they do when writing about us.
