I really need to get off this board and start writing, but I wanted to bring up something before I forget. I was in Borders Bookstore last week and was reading the required school book lists. As the school year gears up most major book stores have displays to help parents and kids buy the books they'll need for most required reading by grade level. You know, the usual European "classics". My day job is an educator, so I try to keep up with the curriculum at all grade levels. (But my night job is as the winged super hero "Stay Black"! ;>)So low and behold, in 11th grade literature, Octavia Butler's "Kindred" IS REQUIRED READING!When did this happen? And why am I so jealous that I missed meeting Octavia as a young girl who so needed to see myself in the literature I was forced to read?
