This is just to make you aware of a new book (just published last month!) titled The Darker Mask: Heroes from the Shadows (Gary Phillips and Christopher Chambers, Editors, Tor Books.) It deals with protagonists in the "superhero mold," but with a twist. From the Introduction:Does a hero always have to be a do-gooder all-American quarterback or a paranoid ex-drunk donning a cape or cowl or brandishing a shield? ...Hell no. The heroes in those first stories... were plain old us—flawed and scared. The heroes in The Darker Mask are not your usual caped crusaders—a crackhead, an "African American" who native Africans see as "just another white man,” a maid—but that is part of their charm. (I mean, who can we really relate to more—an eccentric billionaire vigilante (or inventor) or a stressed-out office worker who has problem sleeping (in the story "Dream Knights")? Contributors include Walter Mosley, L.A. Banks and our very own Tananarive Due (writing with some guy named "Steven Barnes").
