Elitism, Art, and You

Hi all,I recently had a discussion with a friend about Tyler Perry. I voiced that though I was proud of Tyler's achievements; I wasn't impressed with his work. I felt like his movies and stage plays lacked creativity and often border on the predictable, mediocre, and mundane. Though my friend more or less agreed, she also challenged me regarding Tyler's and other artists' place in art. I have to say, she's changed my mind and truly made me think more about this. This is her argument:"I believe there is room for everyone in art... when we start dictating what is "real art" we close our minds to so many possibilities. I feel like that already. honestly. -- that show is just an eye opener to the rest of the world. Why can't Mr. Perry, in all his medocrity, be that to an untapped talented pool of playwrights of Passing Strange and the like? Look at all those beautifully typo'd urban lit novels. I love that they exist. They brought back the readership to young people of color."So my question is this...are we (myself included), with all of our criticisms of Urban Literature and Erotic Literature, marginalizing art and artists? Are those of us who feel this way closet literary elitists?
