During the second half of 2013, I began the process of developing audio versions of many of the books published by KMT Publications. What I have discovered in going through this process is that the audio version of a book provides another creative dimension for the material and puts more life into the written presentation. Of course, a lot depends on the delivery by the narrator, which can either enhance or derail a production. With the addition of music and special effects, even non-fiction books with non-excitable information can be given a new lease on literary life. This was also another revelation for me, the fact that I absorb certain information better in the audio format. For instance, I purchased an audio version of a book entitled "Stolen Legacy" by George G.M. James (narrated by Anthony Stewart) and found that I much more prefer to listen to this book rather than read it. My experience in listening to this material was greatly enhanced.
We have just completed the audio version of "Capoeira: A Tale of Martial Arts Mastery, Mysticism and Love", the first installment of my science fiction trilogy, and I'm thoroughly delighted with the end product. The book is currently in the final technical review stage and will be available for sale around the first part of August 2014. This production includes music, special effects and a narrator that went the extra mile to help bring to life the storyline and its characters. Actor Joe Morton is the narrator for Ralph Ellison's "Invisible Man" audio book, and he gives a superb performance. In listening to a sample reading of this publication, it is very clear that the role of the narrator is central in bringing to life the storyline and its characters. The voice of a skilled narrator can have a huge impact on a listening audience. An audio book production is very similar to the early days of "Radio" (1920s and 30s) when people use to gather around the radio to listen to stories and various other types of presentations (i.e. Joe Louis Fights, Amos and Andy, etc.).
Bottom line, consider audio versions for every book that you publish in order to give it a wider distribution life and a much greater chance of success in the global marketplace. Since we are living during the time of the "Digital Age", this strategy becomes even more relevant and imperative, particularly for Black science fiction writers working diligently to get greater exposure for their works. An audio book just might be the next best thing you can do for your masterpiece when Hollywood and Independent film producers are not calling you or knocking on your door.
