So, I'm going to put myself out here and I hope some of you step out here with me as well.I haven't interacted much with the community here, but I'm trying to change that. Hopefully, you can get a better sense of who I am, and I (and others here) can get a better sense of who you are--through your writing. From what I can tell, a lot of of you here are novelists--you've either published novels and/or are writing novels. I admire that mainly because I'm not there yet. I just can't do it. But as an alternative, I'm writing a collection of related short stories that will end up being novel length. I'm used to the short form, which is one of the reasons why I'm issuing this challenge here.I'd like you to post what I'm calling a cliff hanger opening. It can be the opening to a short story, a novel, or even a chapter of your novel. It should around 200 words. And most importantly, it should make us want to read more. In short, it should be a nice little tease. A taste.A few weeks ago, an editor from an online spec fic mag did this on their blog. She pretty much said most editors either accept or reject a story within the first 200 words. No matter what length you write, I think it's a good exercise.I'll kick it off next post. Feel free to comment.
