There are competing narratives in regard to the origins of humanity. For some people, God created humans. For others, humans evolved from apes to our present form in an accident of natural selection. Elbert Lewis, author of the exciting and riveting science fiction extravaganza, Dawn of Man offers a third origin theory. Present day humans, according to the book, are the result of thousands of years of experimentation to create a super being, a MAN (Mutation Accelerated Nemesis).
The Reeign, who once presided over a vast starfarring civilization, have been reduced to splintered segments by the depredations of a powerful foe they refer to as the Invaders. Because the Reeign are not an aggressive species by nature, they are unable to wage a more vigorous effort to repel the Invaders beyond defensive actions. The more militant of the Reeign, going against the grain of their pacifist tendancies, flee to another part of the galaxy where they begin to conduct experiments where Reeign DNA is merged with the DNA of a variety of primitive sentients to produce highly aggressive, combat oriented warrior races capable of facing the Invaders. Earth is one of the sites used for Reeign experimentation. It is only in the 21st century that the Reeign's genetic experiment on humans begin to bear fruit with the emergence a MAN by the name of Logan.
Dawn of Man focuses on Logan's efforts to fortify Earth against a coming invasion...not from the Invaders, however, but from Reeign factions who have since turned on each other in a bid to dominate the space that Earth happens to be a part of. Dawn of Man is a fast paced, hi tech, philospical thrill ride. I highly reccommend this fabulous work of science fiction.
