I am close to releasing my debut novel: Deadly Artifact. Like many authors who have released their first novel, I am excited about this project. I am also anxious about a particular challenge that I will be facing as well. Here is why.
The planet is Dabenar. The main alien protagonist in the story is a female by the name of Quafeira Ta’ahnn Ra’as. Quafeira is based on a young black woman. Although the principal aliens in the story are called selothians, the selothians are divided into four ethnic races: Hiaven, Elanu, Jantu and Suani. The Jantu race represents earth’s black race.
Quafeira is the youngest member in a family of five people. She is also the only one in her family who has never seen her father, Daljik Ra’as. Daljik Ra’as mysteriously vanished six months before Quafeira was born. A brilliant research physicist, Daljik Ra’as created the most powerful device in the known galaxy. This device is purportedly based on the direct manipulation of the immense gravitational forces of what selothian astrophysicists term a black star.
One day, Daljik vanishes and is never seen again. Her father’s mysterious disappearance has caused numerous problems for the entire family. For young Quafeira, the absence of her father has a more profound effect on her-physically, mentally and emotionally. She has vowed to search for him. There is a serious problem though. Quafeira’s search for her father threatens to expose a secret government weapons research program that could compel other planetary governments to attack the entire planet.
Someone tells her that she had better keep quiet. There is another serious problem. Quafeira lives in the city of Brasdin, which is located in the country of Gothian. Jantu people are a minority in Gothian. The fact that a Jantu physicist is involved raises ethnic tensions. Quafeira suspects that certain members of a powerful corporation murdered her father, although she has no hard evidence as of yet. Quafeira initiates the biggest lawsuit in her planet’s history. Any potential legal victory on her part would have the potential to endanger the entire planet.
All in all, the drama is going to be intense. Personally, I feel that it may be a challenging to sell people on a high suspense, high tech science fiction novel in which the main protagonist is an alien female, who in turn is based upon a strong black female. I would appreciate some feedback on this.
