I joined the BSFS in order to meet writers like myself. I was young (and still am) and like all writing youth I needed a healthy environment of peer writers. When I chose this site I didn't do it because I was looking for black people. I did it because I was looking for people who would engage me. So upon pondering the place this group has in my life and the world of literature at large I found myself compiling the one thing this group would have to do in order for it to be something that both benefits me and and the wider reading world.Engaging in the Monomyth :For those of you that don't know, all of the things humans value are determined by the basic necessities of life that world cultures structure themselves around in order to insure the survival of their hosts and themselves. As stories have been formed and told throughout the ages in the same ways they've more or less been about the same things (i.e. religions,mythologies and philosophies).this group of universal subjects all cultures have in common is called the "Monomyth".So, what I require of the BSFS is that it be a place where the writers don't buy too much into the hype around their own heritage and try to make headlines such as "Black Wheel invented: basically just a wheel but invented by black people".I believe in the intrinsic value of a story. that each one is it's own living being that is shaped by details, true wonder and honestly captured emotions. I believe that the story is the work of the individual, His/her friends, and His/her family.these are things all humans share.The things that make stories today so great is that they the phantasms of one individual or a small group with thoughts the run the similar course that all human thoughts do but have characters set apart from the world that can be compellingly conveyed.individuality and character real solid structures in the human "soul". A persons race is a concept and tool of alienation that hardly exist en-lieu to the actual experience and mind of the individual. The Monomyth is the shared humanity and immensity of value supplied to the application of stories of universal meaning.This is what I have come the BSFS to find.I have found some of it but not all of it.It's time we started pursuing the company of Sci-fi writers of great thought not similar skin or opinion or culture. the globe is fast changing, what we are and what we think may betray us when we don't sacrifice them to be attuned to what is happening. I don't base my decisions on what I am, I base what I am on my decisions.
