The director of the Nigerian science fiction film Kajola says his movie is being criticized for not being African enough. Mind you, I have not seen Kajola. The trailer was posted on BSFS recently. But assertion by his critics really jabbed at my craw! I have a feeling that the Kajola critics' idea of Africa is a view every bit as narrowminded and patronizing as the colonialists of old who could not believe that Africans were capable of any endeavors beyond mud huts and jungle drums. I say a pox on them and their stupidity. Like one Facebook responder replied, Asians have been making science fiction films for a long time and no one has accused those movies of not being Asian enough.
I want science fiction to forge ahead in Africa with gusto, confidence, with a brashness of entitlement and a powerful conviction. Haters step aside or get rolled on. Science fiction will take the continent by STORM!
