You know the great feeling you get at the end of a very good movie? The endorphins are bathing your brain and a tingly sense of satisfaction settles over you. That's how I felt after reading Darkest Hours by fellow BSFS member, DK Gaston. I don't read a lot of suspense thrillers. Nevertheless, regardless of genre a good story is a good story. And Darkest Hours is a good, solid work of noir fiction. The story drew me in and kept my interest until the final page. The characters were very well written and the interplay between the protagonist, Joe Hooker and his best friend, Kool Aid, was masterfully done. Kool Aid was a scene stealer reminiscent of Don Cheadle's role in Devil in a Blue Dress.
Darkest Hours starts off with Private Detective Joe Hooker arriving at the estate of a billionaire on behalf of the client who hired him. When he discovers the billionaire bound and on the verge of death, Hooker finds himself embroiled in a situation that could very well be the death of him and everyone he loves. At the center of this turmoil is a mysterious doll that Joe refuses to relinquish and men are willing to kill for.
I reccommend this book. DK Gaston has an excellent grasp of what it takes to put together an exciting mystery. Check it out!
