history is full of cases where civilizations have been conquered destroyed or have met general decline from theyre once high state. there are many cases where these civilizations have been used in science fiction. if you were to write a story involving them which ones would you want to use and why would you use them.
for example i would want to use Nazi Germany, the Confederacy , and Timbuktu (even though it is only a city). Nazi Germany because of all the technology the mythology behind it and the extensive variety of evil geniuses available for use. the confederacy because of the technology mythology the african american connection and cultural differences and timbuktu because of the mythology behind the place the connection to africa and because it was seen as an intellectual capital in its day.
