In the film, human beings are exposed to a laboratory-designed pathogen designed to destabilize enemy populations. How does it do it? By turning ordinary people into crazed killers. That's what made The Crazies intensely scary, the idea of your neighbors, friends and family members trying to kill you. Not only are our heroes, a small town sheriff and his physician wife, on the run from friends-turned-maniacs, but they have to elude the army which is bent on containing this outbreak by any means at its disposal...and more often than not those means are indiscriminate.
The Crazies is a heart ponding thrill ride which, like good science fiction, provides a glimpse into either a possible future or pulls the curtain back to reveal a likely reality. The latter is even scarier.
