What's up BSFS dolls and guys -:). I haven't posted anything new in so long, so it's about that time (smile). Here's an except from Stealer of Souls:Someone was shaking her. **** awoke to Paul’s solemn, hazel eyed face. It’s time ****. “What’s the matter baby? Bad dream?”Paul scrambled to the floor and tugged at her hand. Come with me.“Where we goin?” the young woman’s voice trembled. “It ain’t safe to go out now! The stealers are out -- they’ll think we tryin to run!”He tugged at her hand again.“I can’t -- ow!” Paul’s grip on her hand increased until it was painful.Let’s go. His face looked nothing near a child’s: his mouth was a thin demanding line, his eyes boring into hers. We won’t be seen.**** realized she was sweating, despite the chilly night. For the first time since they’d met, the question of what he was terrified her.Now ****.She said no more; but got up slipped her feet into her brogans, and threw a shawl about her shoulders. The only light came from the stars and night moons. She trailed Paul, his footing as sure as any cat’s, her heart thumping against her chest, leaving the sleeping quarter behind. Lightning flashed in the sky, then a drum roll of thunder.“Storm’s coming! We got to go back!”The rain began to fall, a drizzle at first then a great downpour, drenching them. But Paul only looked up at her, the water pouring off his small face, and moved relentlessly forward, past the cane fields into the high grass. He stopped just across from the river. **** looked down at him: cold, wet and more than a little angry. “What? Why we here? Why you bring us out here in all this rain?”He disappeared. She screamed and clapped her hands over her mouth. Lightning flashed , illuminating a two story house alongside the river. It hadn’t been there before.Naw --! The house vanished. Lighting claimed the sky and the house reappeared: was tall, with weathered clapboards, and a chimney. She gazed at it, terror and longing vying for dominance inside her. The rain was drenching her -- she was getting soaked -- but these things no longer mattered. There was only the house now. And her destiny. It disappeared. But with the lighting it was there once more.Just turn round and walk -- naw run -- back home. Turn round right now, ‘fore you get yourself in trouble. But Paul was gone. He’d left her. Like everybody else.Lighting flashed and she raced to the house. She’d barely touched the splintered door when a voice called out: “Come in child…”Go back, turn round right now. *** entered the dark warm foyer. At the end of the hall, a woman waited: an old woman with skin the color of ripe bananas, her black hair shot with gray, and falling about her shoulders. Her mouth was a grim line, and her eyes as dark and cold as stone. She smiled, a terrible and yet somehow loving smile, and waved the girl to her. “My name’s Clara, come on child, what you standing there for…? Come on in here, you must be chilled to the bone.”“Come sit by the fire…”Copyright Valjeanne Jeffers 2009, 2010 all rights reserved
