Hello all,

I run The Kitschies, who celebrate progressive, intelligent and entertaining books that contain elements of the speculative or fantastic.

We are a free-to-submit (and yes, we accept self-published and ebook-only books) award in the UK with a cash prize and a handcrafted, unique tentacle trophy.

Past winners include Lauren Beukes, China Miéville, Karen Lord, Nick Harkaway, Kameron Hurley and Patrick Ness. Last year’s winners were Ruth Ozeki’s A Tale for the Time Being (Red Tentacle) and Ann Leckie’s Ancillary Justice (Golden Tentacle), with Malorie Blackman honoured for her work supporting young people and ususing her position as children's laureate to promote diversity in genre literature.

We have four awards:

Red Tentacle and Golden Tentacle (Novel, £1,000) and Debut (£500)
Only novels first published in Great Britain between 1 January and 31 December 2014 are eligible for the Red Tentacle. eBook-only submissions are eligible, as long as they were first published in this calendar year.
To qualify as a debut, the submission must be the author’s first novel in any genre and under any name. The author may have previously published short stories, non-fiction, screenplays and collections.

Inky Tentacle (Cover art, £500)

submissions must be editions published in Great Britain between 1 January and 31 December 2014.
Unlike the other categories, anthologies, collections and novellas are eligible for the Inky Tentacle, as are reprints and paperback editions, as long as the cover is new for the edition submitted.

Invisible Tentacle (Digital £500)
The new tentacle is the Invisible Tentacle, for progressive, intelligent and entertaining fiction that is natively digital (i.e. not just an ebook).
Invisible Tentacle submissions must be editions published in Great Britain between 1 January and 31 December 2014. We recognise that "Published in Great Britain" is a slippery definition in this modern world.

If you're interested in submitting (especially your wacky digital project) please drop us a line on submissions@thekitschies.com
