The Middle Passage looms large in the history of the Black Atlantic and the African Diaspora. Writers like Derrick Bell and our own Ronald Jones have touched on the theme of the slave ship, and it seems an area ripe for "imaginings." Below is a 2008 review of Marcus Rediker's The Slave Ship: A Human History by historian Christopher Leslie Brown in The Nation magazine. Rediker puts the Middle Passage on full display, by treating the vessel of commerce and human misery, as the central star.
