Any scriptwriter or producer who's ever 'pitched' a script as an 'Indie' knows 'pitching is a bitch'. Hardest part is crow-barring some time in between a busy media professional's time for them to listen to your pitch. Once you get there, the 'fun' begins as you go through the process of taking away every reason for them to say 'No' to your project.
Before you so much as make the call to get a coveted appointment for a pitch meeting, you better have a tight script and you better know exactly who your pitching it to! Just like you need to know who your potential film's audience is, you damn well better be aware of who the 'catcher' during your pitch will be. Hopefully, when you get in there you'll have a good idea of whether they'll be interested in what you have to offer. For example; it's a pretty good bet your script about a two-fisted lawman in a down and dirty seaport run by corrupt officials and smugglers will go over like a lead balloon if pitching to Disney Execs!
Another thing to keep in mind is; 'what medium are you open to for distribution?' Yeah, we'd all love to have our work end up on the big screen in multiplexes across the globe but you're planning on the dice rolling straight '11's' for that to work out. It's possible, even probable, but not necessarily likely. However, TV is still an excellent option and the 'net is better still. So don't shoot yourself in both feet by limiting your options to 'theaters or nothing'. Here's a good article concerning pitching your script for Televison:
