S. TORRIANO BERRY - BIO S. Torriano Berry is an award-winning independent filmmaker who has created and executive produced: BLACK INDEPENDENT SHOWCASE, 1991, WHMM-TV 32, Washington, DC, a 13 part series of independent films and videos, and "BLACK VISIONS/SILVER SCREEN: Howard University Student Film Showcase," 2004, a 10 part series of student works for WHUT- TV 32, in Washington, DC. He has written, produced and directed THE BLACK BEYOND, an anthology series of horror, science fiction and supernatural shorts, as well as THE LIGHT & WHEN IT'S YOUR TURN, two half-hour dramatic made-for-TV movies produced through the Minority Advisory Board of WPVI-TV 6, Philadelphia, PA. Berry’s first feature length film, EMBALMER, is available on home video and DVD. It is about a deranged mortician who seeks fresh blood and body fluids to bring his murdered family back to life. A shorter, 30-minute version was a finalist in the Showtime Network Inc.'s 1998 Black Short Filmmaker's Showcase. In 2005, Berry spent nine months in Belize, Central America as co-creator and director of that country’s first dramatic television series “Noh Matta Wat!” Based on the hopes, dreams and struggles of a representative Belizean family. The series its third has completed its 4th season, and a feature length film version "Desires & Deceptions" has been cut from existing story lines. In the literary field, Berry has completed two novels. TEARS, is based on his feature length screenplay concerning racism in America, and THE HONEYMAN'S SON, a historical based coming of age story. He is co-author of two film resource books, THE 50 MOST INFLUENTIAL BLACK FILMS: A Celebration of African American Talent, Determination and Creativity, published by Citadel Press, 2001. As well as, THE HISTORICAL DICTIONARY OF AFRICAN AMERICAN CINEMA, published by Scarecrow Press, 2007. He received his B.A. degree in Art/Photography from Arizona State University, 1981, and his M.F.A. in Motion Picture Production from UCLA, 1985. He is an associate professor at Howard University's Department of Radio, Television and Film. Berry lives in Washington, DC. He is currently on a one-year visiting professorship at the University of Iowa.
