On 20 November 2012 Author Courttia Newland and Toyin Agbetu hosted Africa in Science Fiction in partnership with the Southbank Centre and supported by Words of Colour. Over 150 people poured into the Purcell Room to listen to science fiction writers Biram Mboob and Tosin Coker, playwright Oladipo Agboluaje and Kibwe Tavares, director of the award-winning Robots of Brixton, which was screened at the event along with the acclaimed Pumzi by Kenyan director Wanuri Kahiu. Presented in two parts, Agbetu chaired the lively Universal Mind Control on African sci-fi literature while Words of Colour's executive director Joy Francis moderated Parable of the Talents, which explored the different filmic visions and visionaries of Africa. Despite the strict protocol on filming at the venue, which meant positioning the camera right at the back of the hall, we hope you enjoy what is a snapshot of an insightful and rarely heard debate on how the African Diaspora is projecting itself into the future courtesy of the science fiction genre.
