Eastern Caribbean and Trinidad folklore tells the tale of a slave who was boiled alive in a vat of molasses, and who returns as a vengeful spirit--the Jab Molassie! A symbol of wildness, untamed sexuality, lewdness, resistance to authority and all around "bad-ass-ness," the Jab Molassie harkens back to the post-Emancipation days of Canboulay and Jamette, when ex-slaves and the black poor overran Carnival and struck fear in the hearts of the colonial elites. Jab Molassie today lives on, especially in Jouvert, throughout much of the Eastern Caribbean. Yuh see ah horde ah Jab Molassie comin, bettah run!
