First Cause: A Novel About Human Possibility

First Cause opens, literally, with a bang; its initial sequence follows a news reporter and her cameraman who, on their way to cover a festival, find themselves in the midst of what seems to be a terrorist attack. It soon becomes known that the attack is part of a worldwide series of orchestrated explosions, the source of which is unknown. The results are devastating: governments are decimated and, predictably, widespread panic and scapegoating ensue. Meanwhile, a woman named Angela, an advance scout for the worldwide plot known as the Terra Project, has come to reconsider her mission; she meets a journalist named Adam, with whom she develops an unexpected closeness. She tells Adam about her role in the attacks, and he tells his boss and mentor--who is circuitously connected to the United Sates' President-appoint. The President-appoint, Cyrus Reardon, is a man who escaped from poverty and had no designs on the Presidency; now he must lead a hastily assembled provisional Cabinet, and sort fact from fiction as society frays along its fault lines.
