HBO is showing the first in George RR Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire fantasy epic series 'A Game Of Thrones'.

It is well written, exceptionally well cast, and combines dense political intrigue (in a faux medieval setting that is an AU version of/based on 14th century England) with fantasy and supernatural elements. Forums, Blogs, YouTube and Twitter have discussed episodes around the internet until even rappers have rapped and tweeted their views on characters and their personalities.

The most recent episode has caused outrage by the dramatic killing of a main character. I wont say who.

Have any BSFS members done that, unexpectedly in your novels/novellas/graphic novels?

Killed off a main character? Or even the hero/heroine? Why? And did it yield the result you'd wanted to achieve?

In the case of Game of Thrones, some people have ranted that they wont watch any more, even that they will cancel their HBO subscription. I mysef was gutted-and I'd been 'spoiled' by having read as far as that in the book.I can only admire Martin -who has been working with the showrunners- and the writers for crafting a character so realistic and 3 dimensional, that people are responding as if for a moment they've forgotten its not real...
