First Cause: A Novel About Human Possibility begins when journalist Adam Grey has just woken up in the hospital. By way of flashbacks, news reports and Adam’s interaction with an intern named Gabe, we learn that a week earlier the world was thrown into chaos by coordinated explosions. Adam recalls his recently formed acquaintance/courtship with a woman named Angela; upon reflection, he realizes that she might have something to do with the attacks. Shortly after Adam awakens, letters are sent to news agencies around the world, issuing a vague announcement and a cryptic threat.
As First Cause progresses, the plotlines merge. We meet Cyrus Reardon, a politically agnostic President-Appoint, and his hastily assembled provisional Cabinet; we meet Bob Rheaume, Adam’s mentor, and Bob’s associate, an academic named James Stock; and we learn about a centuries-old Utopian experiment, which has seen great success but from which a troubling splinter group has formed. As the truth emerges, it will challenge their conventional assumptions about what it means to be human.
