It almost seems obvious that we should approach black owned book stores to carry our books but it's not as simple as it seems. We write in a genre which is probably not as popular as it should be among our own, possibly because of the dearth of black characters in this field. Another reason is that usually black owned book stores specialize in historical, current event non-fiction titles to help educate and uplift our folks. And then there's urban fiction which dominates our stores because those who produce it have done an excellent job in selling themselves.
So how do we take our own to our own? Here's some tips.
1). Make a list of AA stores.
Here's a start:BLACKBOOKSSTORES.txt
Make sure you confirm these stores are stil in business. Visit your local stores personally even if you plan on selling to them through a distributor. You'll put a face to the name that will help you stand out when they're flipping through the distributor's catalog. Some local bookstores will offer consignment deals. This may be a way to go, but remember consignments require you to check your inventory and ask for payment. If you're uncomfortable with that process, stick to a distributor.
2). Bring your marketing tools.
Write up a press release for your book and include reviews. Let them know who distributes your books and most importantly let them know they are returnable. If they're not, they should be. Provide promotional material if possible, such as post cards, business cards and flyers for the store to hand out to customers. Schedule book signings and reading whenever possible.
3). Don't assume the book store will buy from you because you're black.
The business owner has a plan just like you. If you don't fit into his/her plan then move on. Approach them like you would any other business and sell your product without the 'help a brother out' attitude. You're perceived advantage will be obvious. Your professionalism will win you business.
4). Sweeten the deal.
I always provide extra posters for the store owner. They can sell them or post them around the store to bring awareness to your books.
These are my tips. Feel free to add yours.
