One thing to remember whether your working on books, comics, graphic novels, games or films, if you're not doing it via an established distributor you'll have to self-publish it!
Though I do nearly all the above, filmmaking is where I have to do the heaviest lifts. Getting the money to make it, market it and distribute the final product is 90% of the battle. With that in mind, here's a video done by film fundraising expert Brian Newman with insights from successful Kickstarter fundraiser and filmmaker Ryan Koo. They break down the newest paths for fundraising and potential market/audience targeting. They also give some cold, hard reality of what it's going to take to get paid for your efforts and some suggestions of what you'll have to do to make that happen.
It's a bit long at an hour and seventeen minutes, but there is a lot of valuable info you wont' hear anywhere else. Also, just because you aren't a filmmaker (yet), don't turn your nose up at this. The models for fundraising cross into the marketing, branding and audience building efforts for novels, comics and especially games. No matter what you're primary focus for creation is, eventually you'll need to know how to create an audience and more....
