Best read of 2017

Posted on January 15, 2018 at 12:07pm 0 Comments

The last 18 months in my life have been unpredictable, and not in good ways. Now that my health issues seem to have quieted down, it's past time I posted here.

As a freelance reviewer for Foreword Reviews magazine, I get to read free books of above-average quality from independent presses. The standout- read for last year was An Unkindness of Ghosts by Rivers Solomon. You can find my review here:…

Return to BSFS

Posted on July 6, 2016 at 11:16pm 2 Comments

Wow. Nearly 2 yrs since I last posted here? Well, I could trot out the usual excuses (all of which are valid, btw), but what's the point? It'd be a long list of illness (physical and mental), lack of money and motivation, etc. blah woof.

So. I'm back here, for now. Looking forward to what's been happnin since I was last here. Book reccs welcomed. Last one I read by a non-white person was Errick Nunnally's Blood for the Sun, which I liked a lot. Reviewed it for Foreword Reviews…

Foreword Reviews: Another marketing tool

Posted on August 9, 2014 at 2:57am 0 Comments

Independent (aka small-press) publishers and author-publishers tend to do a lot of marketing with as little $$ as possible. Sites like BSFS provide members with the opportunity to promote their work on this site. So, is there a marketing tool that all of the above could benefit from with minimal $$ outlay?…

Thank goodness winter's over

Posted on June 5, 2014 at 4:46pm 0 Comments

The snow mountains at the end of my driveway have been gone about a month. Much snow descended on my village this winter, much-needed water to replenish underground aquifers in the area. With the increase in sunshine, my depression has again faded back; more smiles and laughter is always a good thing. :-)…

Product Review Updates #6

Posted by Stephen Alexander on November 9, 2018 at 7:30am 0 Comments

Occasionally, I will alert fellow members to product updates by creators I have reviewed in the past year or so.

  • The conclusion of The Conscious Dreams Saga has finally arrived! You can buy The Sacrifice of Knowing (The Conscious Dreamer Series Book 3) at Amazon today! The first book is also free, BTW. I've been waiting for this for a while (the first book was my #2 favorite work in our club)
  • Some of the Kickstarters advertised in the Black Comics Creators group have made their budgets. Look out for Niobe by Sebastian Jones and Scorpio by John Robinson IV. If you're…

Nasty Tricks and Tasty Treats

"LaShaun, you better not be on the roof again."

"Mom, we're just up here playing Spider and Prey. We want it to look realistic."

"Hurry up and get dressed for Halloween."

"I am dressed. I am wrapped in spider-silk and Frank's going to dangle me from the roof at just the right moment."

"Did you put the lights up?"

"Yes, mom. Remote's in the kitchen."

"What's my part?"

"You don't have a part. You're the Mom handing out candy to innocent children. That is your part. You also get to be technical support. Turn on the lights after I twitch convincingly and then surprise moan."

"Frank makes his menacing hiss and the kids run off screaming into the night."

"No they won't."

"Yeah, Mom, they will. Remember when he jumped…

Shrink Ray...

Posted by Reginald L. Goodwin on October 25, 2018 at 5:30am 0 Comments

Using a new kind of "shrink ray", UT Austin scientists can alter the surface of a hydrogel pad in real time, creating grooves (blue) and other patterns without disturbing living cells, such as this fibroblast cell (red) that models the behavior of human skin cells. Rapid appearance of such surface features during cell growth can mimic the dynamic conditions experienced during development and repair of tissue (e.g., in wound healing and nerve regrowth). THE UNDERGROUND BY ROXANNE BLAND

Life as alpha of a werewolf pack is anything but predictable. But even Parker Berenson is surprised by the latest twist: he’s fallen in love with a space alien. Problem is, he suspects Melera, his sexy new flame, might be the serial killer terrorizing Seattle. Or maybe she isn’t. After all, just because she’s an interstellar assassin doesn’t mean she’s guilty.
