Ever since the release of Assassin’s Creed 2 (and Assassin’s Creed 2:2 and Assassin’s Creed 2:3) people have been speculating and fantasizing about what Assassin’s Creed 3 might be. French Musketeers? Russian Revolution? Modern day? Another game about Ezio? Now, finally, we have something to go on. A piece of completely unconfirmed cover art and a leaked banner suggest that Assassin’s Creed 3 will take place during the American Revolution and may star a Native American assassin. Oh hecks yes.The rumors are based around a couple of things. Briefly, the GameInformer website was displaying a banner for Assassin’s Creed 3 that showed an assassin standing next to someone who is pretty clearly George Washington. The banner was taken down, but Toastervision managed to get a screen grab. That lines up nicely with a Kotaku post regarding a tip from a Best Buy employee who sent in the large cover-shot shown above. The American Revolution setting seems pretty dead on considering that flag. The Native American thing involves a little more guesswork, but was put forth by Kotaku, considering the jewelry the assassin seems to be wearing, and the fact that he’s wielding what appears to be a tomahawk. If not a full-blooded Native American, he may at least be of Native American descent. All this speculation is probably going to get cleared up and confirmed here in the near future, but the setting seems to be all but certain as is. This will mark a huge step forward in time for the series, and a completely different locale, with the possibility of like, forests and snow. The positioning of the assassin with George Washington seems to suggest that the player will be at least tangentally involved with notable aspects of the American Revolutionary War and we can only hope that Ben Franklin will make an appearance as a North American Leonardo Da Vinci. It’s great to see Assassin’s Creed finally take a jump into something new (probably). Here’s to hoping they can grasp the next ledge.
